About 'The Dish on Washington'

This site is the final project for HIST 697 at George Mason University. It will explore the world of elite colonial Virginia dining through the experience of George Washington and his family.

While exploring this site, it is important to note that Washington's life in many ways was exceptional. The way his family lived and ate were very different from other Virginians who were not as wealthy or who were enslaved.

Even though their story is not discussed in-depth here, it is also important to remember that there were many other people who lived at Mount Vernon. A community of almost 300 enslaved people had their own unique experiences with food and dining, separate from the Washingtons.
